Treating Insect Bites

With all this lovely weather we have had (hopefully it will return soon), we have seen a lot of people with insect bites.

Why Do They Itch?
It all goes back to the immune system and its valiant effort to rid our bodies of infection. When an insect bites our akin, it leaves behinds saliva or venom that is immediately identified as an invader. As a response, our bodies release histamines to signal something is going on. White blood cells rush to the area irritating all the nerves surrounding the bite and cause the itch.

How to Treat
There are some great OTC products that can help:

Cortopin 1% Hydrocortisone Cream (€5.55)

Anthisan Cream (€6.85)

Eurax Cream 30g (€6.25) 100g (€10.96)

Along with these you can take an oral anti-histamine such as Piriton (may cause drowsiness) or Zirtek.

There are also some remedies that can help:
  • Apply Heat using a warm face cloth or running the bite under a warm tap. This is only a temporary fix.
  • Apply Cold (a cold pack or ice cube). The drop in temperature will slow the production of blood cells in the infected site and also numb the nerves.
  • Make a paste with bicarbonate of soda. The alkaline in it will  neutralise the pH levels of the bite.
  • Soothe the itch with honey. Honey is a natural antibiotic and will help relief the itch fast.
We have a range of preventatives in store with insect repellents and repellent bands that you wear.  We have products suitable for both adults and children.

While most are treatable over the counter, some can become infected.
