AMD Awareness Week
This week is AMD Awareness Week (age related macular degeneration) in Callagy's Pharmacy.
What is AMD?
AMD is the leading cause of blindness in Ireland. Symptoms can go unrecognised so it is really important people over the age of 50 get their eyes tested regularly so that if there are any signs of AMD, it can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible.
Early Symptoms
The most common symptom is slightly blurry vision. Wavy lines or a blind spot in the centre of the field of vision are other symptoms.
Types
- Dry: This is the most common form of the condition and develops slowly, eventually leading to loss of central vision. As of yet, there is no proven treatment for dry AMD.
- Wet: This is caused by leaky blood vessels inside the eye. It is less common then dry AMD but it can cause more rapid vision loss. If diagnosed and treated early, as much sight as possible can be saved and some people may even see an improvement in their sight.
Protecting your vision
While wet AMD can't necessarily be prevented, there is treatment available and its onset can be delayed by making some lifestyle changes and by ensuring you have your eyes examined regularly.
- Stop smoking straight away to decrease your chances of developing AMD.
- Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and vegetables.
- See an optician or eye doctor if you notice any changes in your vision.
- Have a thorough eye exam every two years.
As part of the week, we have handy eye test for you to try, aswell as a recipe book for eye health and a small book with a selection of classic stories adapted to shine a light on age related macular degeneration.
There are some supplements you can take including Macu-shield and Lutein Omega 3 you can take but please seek advice from your doctor before starting any.
