AMD Awareness Week
This week is AMD Awareness Week (age related macular degeneration) in Callagy's Pharmacy. What is AMD? AMD is the leading cause of blindness in Ireland. Symptoms can go unrecognised so it is really important people over the age of 50 get their eyes tested regularly so that if there are any signs of AMD, it can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Early Symptoms The most common symptom is slightly blurry vision. Wavy lines or a blind spot in the centre of the field of vision are other symptoms. Types Dry: This is the most common form of the condition and develops slowly, eventually leading to loss of central vision. As of yet, there is no proven treatment for dry AMD. Wet: This is caused by leaky blood vessels inside the eye. It is less common then dry AMD but it can cause more rapid vision loss.
